Clothes to the people - Conversation 1: voddenmannen followed by a pop-up

Clothes to the people with voddemannen

In collaboration with the writer Lukas Mauve, Warehouse is launching a series of public interviews, called Clothes to the people, exploring new ways of thinking, engaging with and experiencing fashion. Through conversations with Amsterdam-based designers, the series seeks to bridge the gap between practice and theory – making and thinking – in criticizing fashion and unearth what radical transparency could mean for the fashion system at large.

voddenmannen is an Amsterdam-based fashion label started by designer Rens de Waal. Working in extremely small batches, sold only at occasional pop-ups, he specializes in creating one-of-a-kind pieces by transforming and remodeling existing textiles and garments, sourced from the Salvation Army. No retailers, no e-commerce, and no website, Voddenmannen deliberately exists outside the usual fashion cycle, uniquely allowing them to criticize it through every decision they take.

The conversation will be followed by a pop-up with voddenmannen batch 17. For this, Rens de Waal created some more of the “jersey jacket hybrids” the “honey I shrunk the knitwear” must haves and off course a good range of overshirts as well as some first heavy winter outerwear and coats. Oddly enough batch 17 has a lot of dark tones in colour.
